Cats and long-term memories
Cats and their capacity for remembering is not exactly considered to be a “base kitty trait”, one that is overshadowed by the cat’s other known attributes.
From being able to see in the dark, their incredible agility and their superior balance, the cat’s capacity to remember and recall is heralded to be something else, but is not exactly a trait that’s associated with furry felines.
However, cats and long-term memories do have a relationship, but it is one that is based on what a cat does, not exactly on what a cat sees.
The 1985 Stephen King classic Cat’s Eye, starring a very young Drew Barrymore, delved into the area of a cat’s memory retention abilities, telling the story of a stray cat who would get into short story plots rooted on the suspense and horror genre. With three short stories told from the point of view of a cat, the movie was quite unique, something which can only expected from a master storyteller like Stephen King.
But if the story’s premise were to be matched with the studies and experiments of Kier Pearson and David McVea of the Department of Physiology, University of Alberta, Canada, it would have plot holes.
As the results of the researchers’ study would reveal, cats are more inclined to remember things through movement and not through the things that they see, making the movie’s overall context out of place or misinterpreted.
In the study, a two-part series of tests were imposed on cats, with the two touching up on a cat’s ability to “remember” walkpaths. Essentially testing a cat’s capacity to remember by sight and capacity to remember through movement, the overall results note that a cat is more inclined to store information based on the things they do, with their visual-related memories not as sharp.
Noted to keep short term memories based on movement for longer durations, the study has proven to become valuable to cat owners everywhere, opening a window in better understanding how cats can remember things.

Axioms and adages endear through the ages because they certainly hold volumes of truth, in reference to the wisdom which brought them to being.
Take “curiosity killed the cat”, for example.
Though no “killed” or deaths did actually happen, news of a stray calico getting herself in a tight spot because of her curiosity recently came about, with reports from the Birmingham Mail (UK).
The stray calico, as reports indicate, managed to effectively wedge her head in the wheel-hub of an automobile, which raised alarm and concern for passerby who saw the kitty’s tight situation.
A homeowner who noted the calico’s plight called the attention of authorities, doing what any concerned and responsible citizen would. Officers of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals managed to free the kitten via unconventional means – using K-Y Jelly in “loosening” the kitty’s stuck head.
Hercharn Boal of the RSCPA shares that at first, he tried using margarine to facilitate the easy “slipping” of the kitten’s head. Since that didn’t work, the next plan would have been to take the car’s tire out, bring the wheel-and-kitten to a hospital, then surgically cut the metal parts of the wheel in freeing the kitten.
Someone luckily suggested using K-J Jelly in place of margarine, which did well in easily slipping out the stuck kitty. After a thorough look over at the Birmingham Animal Hospital, the kitten’s age was pegged at 10 weeks old, and was given a new name, Alloy.
Alloy is now waiting for adoption, and given her “curious history”, potential pet owners would have to pay extra attention to just how curious Alloy could get in the future.

Think ‘Persian’ without the long hair. That’s the Exotic Shorthair. The first Exotic Shorthair cats were produced in the 1950s by American Shorthair breeders looking to improve the breed. They used Persian cats as outcross. At first, these short-haired ‘Persians’ were rejected by cat fanciers but by 1966, the Cat Fanciers Associated accepted this breed under the name Exotic Shorthair. Since then, other breeds were mixed into the breeding of the Exotic Shorthair, including Himalayan and British shorthair. Don’t be surprised if you see a very Persian-looking kitten in an Exotic Shorthair litter—that’s their Persian heritage peeking out. In fact, some cat associations will allow you to enter this ‘Exotic Longhair’ cat under the Persian category.Exotic Shorthairs have a large, cobby body that’s a little low to the ground and weigh about 3.5 to 6 pounds. Exotic Shorthair cats have a loving character, funny and smart. They appear to have inherited the best character traits of both Persians and American Shorthair—as calm and gentle as a Persian but as lively and as good a mouse hunter as an American Shorthair. Their great affection and loyalty to their owners make them excellent lap cats. They are also very fastidious.
Exotic Shorthair may have been the model for the comic strip cat Garfield.
Care and grooming Exotic Shorthair Cats
Compared to the Persian cat, Exotic Shorthair, are relatively easier to maintain and groom, owing to their short hair and their ability to clean their own fur. They just need a weekly brushing and combing to remove loose hair, and prevent shedding and hairballs.
Because of its flat face shared with the Persian, the Exotic Shorthair’s eyes usually overflow with tears, which dampen and stain the face. You’ll need to wipe the cat’s face from time to time with a damp cloth, tissue or a commercial product especially made for flat-faced cats.
Health of Exotic Shorthair cat
Like Persian cats, Exotic Shorthair cats are prone to Feline polycystic kidney disease (PKD)—which, in developed nations can be as high as 40 to 50% in the Exotic Shorthair population. DNA detection and neutering of PKD positive cats are helpful to curb the incidence of PKD.
