']]}Not All Speed: Cheetahs Kill in Prey-Specific 'Deadly Tango' of Agility
A new study of cheetahs has determined that the cat's unrivaled speed it not the only tactical advantage it has while on the hunt: cheetahs also employ a killing technique equivalent to a deadly tango that is specific to the type of prey they are after.
The study, which was published in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters, was conducted by an international team of researchers who used GPS and accelerometer data loggers to study the big cats.

Cheetah Facts
Cheetahs, being one of the big cats found in Africa, are known for being the most graceful and fastest of the lot, just as how the leopard is known for its ferocity and just as how the lion is infamous for its majestic regality.
The subject of countless movies and short films, a more in-tune view of the cheetah was featured in the 2005 feature, Duma, with the movie telling the story of a cheetah and a boy living in South Africa.
With a lifespan which ranges somewhere between 10 to 20 years, the cheetah is famed for being the fastest land animal in the world, though its speed aspect is actually rated in “bursts” or in “sprints”, not necessarily rated for extended durations and/or distances.
Built for speed, the cheetah’s long muscular legs affords it with the capacity to cover more distances when running, as its round-shaped head, flexible spine and long tail are prefect complements to the cheetah’s running stance.
Its body’s physical build for speed is backed by its unique paws, with claws with are un-retractable, much like how the paws of dogs are known, and with paw pads geared for better traction and footing when on the move.
Typically found in the open savannas, the cheetah’s preferred prey has long been pegged to be antelopes. Though they are predators, they also are prey to certain species, including hyenas, lions, eagles and the most dangerous of them all, human beings.
Cheetahs are generally described as shy creatures, with cheetahs not as often encountered when compared against other big cats. At risk of extinction, the factors which have caused for the decline of cheetah populations includes the loss of its natural habitat, death of young cheetahs (with a number dying within three months after their birth), and poaching.
Considered to be the easiest to domesticate of all the big cats, histories of cheetahs being utilized in hunting parties are known to exist, with a number of historic personalities having been described to own a pet cheetah at one point in time.
Given their overall uniqueness, the cheetah remains to be one of the world’s most well-loved creatures, with a lot of attention focused on helping cheetah population thrive amidst the challenges the species is faced to deal with.

Cheetahs remain to be one of the most popular of the “big cats”, famed for being the fastest land mammal ever known to be.
The movie tells the tale of how a family took it upon themselves to adopt a cheetah, only to realize that they had domesticated it too much, and that it had to be set free for it to actually learn to survive in the wild. Ironically, the cheetah fell into the hands of poachers, who had intentions of actually introducing the fast cat into a dog race as an added attraction.
Needless to say, the cheetah was rescued by its past owners from the would-be gambling ring lords, ending the movie with an inside look at the threats and dangers cheetahs are faced to deal with on a day to day basis.
As fast as cheetahs are known to be, the movie did feature something about cheetahs which isn’t well known to most – how similar their body physique is with dogs. From the overall shape of a cheetah’s body, to its paws and claws, cheetahs actually bear more physical similarities with dogs, which contributes to their fast running attribute.
The paws of a cheetah are similar with how a dog’s paws are, with their claws not being retractable, with soft pads geared to weather the rigors of fast running. Their body physique is also similar with dogs, lean like that of a Greyhound’s , and generally built for speed.
As the cheetah holds the distinction of being the fastest land mammal, they continue to be legendary among the bigger cats, with their speed being their more notable and more famous attribute.

Like most cats, cheetahs are very cute when young. These pictures show that fact. What is not obvious is that cheetahs are virtually clones of one another. Proof of this is that skin grafts between unrelated cheetahs are not rejected by the recipient—something that commonly happens only in close relatives, like twins. Scientists say that, due to an incident millions of years ago, the cheetahs we now see today are descended from a very small kinship group from Asia that, despite being very inbred, managed to spread across Asia and Africa for thousands of years. Another fact: cheetahs may not be monogamous, but they establish ‘bromances’ for life.
