The 6 Best Dogs for Adventure: The Saluki

{[['']]}
The right dog for your adventures boils down to finding a partner you’re compatible with. But if you haven’t decided yet and want to know which breeds are best for active lifestyles, it’s best to know the breed’s personality. For instance, retrievers are all about having fun. They’re loyal and eager to please. Sighthounds on the other hand, love speed, so they’re great for running.

Here’s a look at a great dog for outdoor adventures.

The Saluki

Hailing originally from Egypt, the Saluki stands out for being one of the oldest breeds of domesticated dog, with records of their companionship with humans traced back to the sixth millennium B.C.

Salukis are sighthounds, which means they were originally bred for the purpose of hunting gazelles. These athletic canines, despite their “job description,” are amazingly gentle and affection, but are also known for being independent.

The Saluki is also a long distance runner, having a slower heart rate that pumps more blood and oxygen throughout its body, allowing it to run longer and further. This canine also looks like it was made for running,
what with its long, slender frame that’s very similar to the Greyhound. And just like that prized runner, the Saluki has a double-suspension gallop, which means that when it runs, it does it so fast all four of its legs are off the ground simultaneously.

Being avid runners and eager for adventure, Salukis should be supervised at all times, lest they run into a car accident.
